DUNCAN THOMPSON

It is with great sadness that I heard of Duncan’s passing last night.
Duncan was a past Captain of Swanston Golf Club (2008-10) and his contribution to the club was immense particularly during the change of ownership when he was instrumental in bridging the gap between the old and the new.

He joined the Lothians Executive and was Competition Secretary during his time with the Lothians. He was also a qualified golf referee and I well remember the time in a Championship Final when I asked him for a free drop from some grass cuttings only to be told quite abruptly that I could take a drop but it wouldn’t be a free one!

I will miss having the odd pint with him in the Templar Bar and I know his regular companions on the course, Derek, Stevie, Kyle, Foss and Grant will miss the banter and the competitive nature he brought to every game he played.

His efforts on behalf of Colinton Mains GC will never be forgotten by me and typical of Duncan, the last text he sent me on the 1st of May was to remind me that the Cameronian Trophy was to be played on the Friday night!

He told me last summer when we were sitting having a pint outside at the picnic tables that he wouldn’t see next summer.
He knew then his illness had got the better of him and his bravery in the face of that news was typical of the man.
Duncan was 67.

Rest In Peace Duncan.
